When Beyoncé opens a show with a surprising performance, things are bound to level up from being ordinary to extraordinary. On Sunday night, 16th annual BET Awards happened over the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
The award ceremony showcased a mix of pop, R&B, and rap artists and was undoubtedly one of the best BET Award nights. Though Price’s recent death had made everyone somewhat somber, the remarkable performances from musicians made it worth-watching night. Here we go with the best moments of BET Awards 2016.
Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar
It is not possible to talk about pop and not have Bey in the scene. The awards show started with excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther’s popular speech, “I have a dream” while Bey and her team of dancers got into positions. The performance was choreographed to perfect and matched Lemonade’s intensity.
When Kendrick came on stage and joined Bey, the duo danced fiercely with their way too good vocals. It was one of the must-see performances.
Four Performances as Tributes for Prince
We saw four tributes and all of them were spectacular. Starting from Bilal and Eykah Badu’s performance, Badu dressed in a white fur coat and Kangol hat sang, “The Ballad of Dorothy Parker” while Bilal sang “The Beautiful Ones”. Evoking Prince’s primal, Bilal tore off his shirt and writhed on the floor.
Stevie Wonder is certainly the only person who can pull off Prince’s performance in an iconic manner. He sang the bubbly pop song, “Take me with U”. Tori Kelly was all for providing harmonies. Jennifer Hudson came on stage and gave a chilling Broadway bombast, “Purple Rain”.
Janelle Monae paid tribute to Prince by creating a medley of his jubilants hits like “Delirious”, “Kiss”, ‘Pop Life”, and “I Would Die 4 U”. She was dressed in a white lace getup and made everyone reminiscent about the Purple Rain-era costumes of Prince.
Sheila E.’s enchanting performance was everything that a closing act should have. It was almost magical. She had worked on a seven minute medley. She smashed drums during “Housequake”, and then jammed through “A Love Bizarre”, “U Got the Look”, “Let’s Work”, and “Erotic City”.
Jesse Williams’ Impressive Acceptance Speech
Grey Anatomy’s actor, Jesse Williams is a social justice advocate who even during his acceptance speech at the BET awards couldn’t keep himself from talking about human rights. He said, “This award is not for me. It’s for the real organizers across the country: the activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents … that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand”.
Usher Honors the BET Stage
Usher is the king of award shows and he knows it very well. He has always been pretty serious about choreographing his videos to perfection so the performance was no different. He performs at every award show like it is a music video of his and thus his performance of “No Limit” was no different either.
All in all, BET’16 awards were a must to see, the night was full of exciting performances and tributes to the legendary Prince. What was your favorite moment from the night? Let us know in the comments section below. Cheers.
