The Disney animated classic, “Sleeping beauty” from 1959 tells an untold tale of one of the most dared and intriguing characters- Maleficent. Who would have thought that she was not so evil, once upon a time?
She was a charming young woman, with beautiful black wings, who grew up in a harmonic forest kingdom. She became the most rigid protector of the kingdom when one army of men threatened the harmony of her beloved kingdom. After living through a betrayal her heart becomes a cold and solid rock. Lead by cruel revenge she lead a battle against the king’s army, and throws a curse on the king’s daughter Aurora. While Aurora was growing up Maleficent realized that Aurora holds the key to peace for the entire kingdom, even for Maleficent true happiness.
The animated movie revives a tale screened more than half of a century ago, which comes back with new depth, new relations and better understanding of the hatred and darkness which surround some characters. The introducing of the enchanted forest and the kingdom. It is filled with magical parts of nature; where the eternal battle is not presented only through the characters, but through colors as well.
Maleficent’s cold behavior and appeal cause those chills to go down the spine. She wears black, has horns and wears leather presenting the sadness and terror she feels within, causing all to feel the same with her presence. On the other hand, Aurora’s character fills in the balance of their magical world, where she represents cheerfulness and the ultimate good.
The baby shower for princes Aurora is a decade’s old story which many people are well acquainted to. It is within the story of “Sleeping Beauty”, where Maleficent strikes Aurora with a curse. How many people ever really wondered what the reasons were for Maleficent turning bad, when she was a fairy?
Director Robert Stromberg tried to research the so far untold tale of Maleficent, the evil fairy. Angelina Jolie was awarded to play the main character. She did a fairly well in her role and dedicated her work and act to her four year old daughter Vivienne who also made a debut in the movie. As Jolie explained on the press conference, she was a great fan of Maleficent when she was a little girl. And she was one of her favorite Disney characters. Loved and feared by all at the same time, Maleficent was an inspiration for Jolie. The confrontation of emotion tells the story which all people go through, the change and the fear within. Everyone should have a chance for redemption, even Maleficent.
A fairy tale is not worth telling if the end does not come as a victory of good over evil. The power of the fairy tale metaphorically investigates the transformations within the negative character sending of a positive message. The dramatic effects show off human emotions. How every person can carry good and evil within him, as we can see in the character of Maleficent. She is proud, fearless, evil, but behind that mask lays a hurting and lonely being.
