Two young guns who know exactly what will make their fans go crazy. Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga are two of the most popular and biggest names in pop as well as being two of the most outrageous and controversial modern day artists on the planet. Miley Cyrus of course had the whole ‘twerking’ incident at the VMA’s last year but coincidentally Lady Gaga also pulled off an equally outrageous opening performance at the same event. So the question that who is more outrageous is not that simple to answer.
To help in answering the question let’s take a look back over their most outrageous and jaw dropping performances and outfits from the past year to see if we can find an answer.Who is bolder of the two? Well, both of them are experts at staging such remarkable performances which have controversial elements attached with them as a must. So if you are wondering that which one of the two is more outrageous, you may not find an answer. However, both of them bring some spices to make us crazy and this is what matters the most!
Lady Gaga’s Saturday Night Live Performance in 2013. She put on a stage show that was both visually stunning and energetic. She was continuously bumping and grinding with the singer R. Kelly whom she was performing with while wearing a provocative one piece pant suit, encrusted with sequins with a huge V cut down to her navel. In the same year, by comparison, Miley on the same show put on a ‘straight’ performance and stood and simply sang, for once there was no gimmickry.
What is important to note is that these two artists are remarkably good at putting on stunts. They put on performances that are shockingly different and it has to be said that last year Miley seemed to have had the upper hand. We of course need to once again mention the VMA’s hugely embarrassing and uncomfortable ‘twerkfest’ performance, as who could possibly forget that? Then there was also the video for “Wrecking Ball” where she is seen sitting, swinging on a wrecking ball wearing only a pair of builder’s boots, and then there was the infamous Halloween costume that exposed her left breast. We also have to mention her stunt of smoking marijuana while on stage at the MTV’s Europe Music Awards in Amsterdam.
If we consider outrageous costumes then we would assume that the crown would go to Lady Gaga but let us look more closely. When Miley performed at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas she wore a white mesh dress with thong and panties as support. Therefore, leaving nothing to the imagination and once again THAT VMA performance where she donned a skin tight plastic bikini. Lady Gaga though has worn a black halter top shaped as hands and has worn a bikini top made of two sea shells to name but a few of her original outfits so the outrageous outfit contest is too close to call.
We have to question if Miley is being outrageous simply for ‘outrageous sake’ or if there is a message and a deeper meaning in what she is portraying, if so this is not clearly evident. Whereas when watching Lady Gaga, although her performances and costume are always ‘over the top’ they are more noticeably ‘theatrical’ and seem to have meaning in what she is conveying to her audiences, her being outrageous does have a meaning and is done so as an art form, this is something that Miley does not possess. They both kissed each-other
So to conclude, both artists are outrageous but portray this in very different ways.
