Arizona Coyotes

Phoenix based professional ice hockey team Arizona Coyotes has embarked on the successful journey since its beginning. Began as the Winnipeg Jets in 1971, the team has secured the league’s championship trophy Avco World Trophy thrice. As one of finding franchises in the World Hockey Associations, Jets earned tremendous success in no time in the short lived WHA and finished as the WHA’s final champions in 1979. The team took its name from the Winnipeg Jets of the Western Canada Hockey League.

This iced hockey team competes in the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Pacific Division of the Western Conference. After being played for nine years for World Hockey Association (WHA), the team merged into the National Hockey League. The team was not able to gain WHA success into the NHL after merging. The team went through the bad time as most of their best players were lost. However, the Jets recovered quickly by making the playoffs eleven times in next 15 seasons.

In 1990s, the Jets have to undergone some financial troubles when players’ salaries began spiraling up. Financial problems and small home arena and many other problems brought the team to Phoenix. The team was renamed the Phoenix Coyotes. Management chose the name Phoenix Coyotes after a successful name-the-team contest.

As Phoenix Coyotes, the team underwent several changes. Many players left the club including Alexei Zhamnov and new members were added in the team including Jeremy Roenick from the Chicago Blackhawks and Mike Gartner from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The team used to play in their home, America West Arena that was not an adequate place for hockey. Actually, this place was not constructed with a hockey rink in mind. The owner Richard Burke could not attract more investors to better the financial woes of the team and he sold the team to the group consist of Steve Ellman, Wayne Gretzky and Jerry Moyes in 2001. Since 2003, the Coyotes have played their games at Gila River Arena.

In 2008, Coyotes massive lose and financial suffering was highlighted by the media. The team was handed over to NHL in 2009 after declaring bankruptcy by the owner Jerry Moyes. Moyes tried to privately sell the team to Canadian Billionaire Jim Balsillie who wished to relocate the team to Hamilton, Ontario. NHL protested against this selling by claiming it the violation of league policy.

The bankruptcy news led to lost of the annual revenue. NHL decided that team would deal with the city and new ownership. The Glendale City Council approved a fifteen year lease agreement with Renaissance Sports and Entertainment (RSE) in 2013. In 2014, the team name was changed to Arizona Coyotes.
