Baltimore Ravens

Brief History

After the 1995 league expansion, it was expected that the city of Baltimore will be granted NFL franchise and will be able to come up with its best financial program. However, due to certain other important matters, Baltimore was passed over and instead of it some small level markets got the franchise in Florida and North Caroline. It raised a lot of controversy and outrage but Baltimore failed to get the franchise via expansion which forced them to come up with the idea of getting some existing franchise. At that time, Cleveland Browns, the owner was in a pinch. So on 6th of November in 1995 due to his debt and other problems with the city of Cleveland, he made the announcement of moving the team to Baltimore. This gave rise to a flurry of actions and finally on 8th of February in 1996, Cleveland and NFL settled the issues with the conditions that everything associated with the Browns will remain with them and a new expansion team under Art Modell will be formed. This team was the Baltimore Ravens. Ted Marchibroda was hired as the head coach and Ozzie Newsome was hired as director and became General Manager later. Surveys were conducted to choose the name of the franchise and finally "Ravens" was chosen as a tribute to the poet E.A. Poe who wrote a poem of the same name.
