History

Buffalo has deep roots of professional hockey. The Buffalo Bisons were an important part of American Hockey League (AHL). Bison was very common name among sports teams of Buffalo. In order to find a name other than Bison, there held a contest for the new name. ‘Sabres’ was decided and since then, the team is known as Buffalo Sabres.

The team won the very first game with 2-1 against the Pittsburg Penguins. Gilbert Perreault led the Sabres in scoring with 38 goals and helped the team won the Calder Memorial Trophy. In 1971, Rene Robert was traded from the Pittsburg Penguins that proved to be good fortune for the team. In the homage to their French-Canadian roots, the movie was nicknamed the ‘French Connection’. In the 1972-73, the team made the playoffs for the first time. In the next season, Sabers made its way to Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in the history of the team. The team played against Philadelphia Flyers in heavy fog due to lack of air conditioning in the ‘Buffalo Memorial Auditorium’. The game was won by the Sabres because of the goal made by Rene Robert in overtime.

As the French Connection, the team had success through the late 70s but unfortunately could not make it back to the finals. With the trade of Rene Roberts to the Colorado Rockies in 1979 and Martin’s trade to the Los Angeles Kings in 1981, the French Connection era ended.
