Michigan State Spartans is a brilliant athletic team consisting of twenty five varsity sports teams representing the Michigan State University. History

The University went through several changes in 1925 and all teams were considered as ‘Aggies’ due to main emphasis on agriculture. In the vague of moving beyond agricultural roots, the state decided to held a contest for finding a new nickname and picked a name, ‘The Michigan Staters’. In that year, sports editor of the Lansing State Journal George S. Alderton was responsible for official heading of the University. After finding the name cumbersome for newspaper, he vowed to find a better name. Alderton came up with the name Spartan and began to use sparingly in into headlines. Later, this nickname was also picked up by sports writer of the Lansing Capitol News. In 1926, first Southern baseball training tour of the Michigan State’s gave birth to the nickname ‘Spartans’. The name taken as an experiment rapidly gain momentum and began to appear in newspapers.

Mascot

‘The Spartan’ a statue has become the mascot of the team. The Sparty warrior is the outcome of the artistry of Professor Leonard D. Jungwirth and permanently placed in the atrium of the Spartan Stadium Tower. The beloved Sparty of Michigan State has secured three national championships at the Mascot Competition of the Universal Cheer Association at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. 2004 was the lucky year for the Sparty as it became the First Big Ten mascot of winning the national title. Following national title, he beat Goldy Gopher and Bucky Badger and defended his national championship in 2005.

Marching Band

The Spartan Marching band consisting of three hundred members is one of most recognized and oldest marching band in the country. Marching band was found in 1877 with only ten members. The strict uniform codes are still adhered and checked before every performance.

Games

Michigan State University is the participant of the NCAA’s Division I-A.
