Minnesota Vikings

The 53 year old Minnesota Vikings professional American Football team was established in the year 1961, when the decision was made to open a franchise in Minnesota as part of the expansion in 1960. The Vikings have been part of the National Football League (NFL) since its establishment and have a part of a few divisions; the team began by playing in the Western Conference from 1961 to 1969 where they were in the Central Division those last two years, switched to the NFC (National Football Conference) Central Division from 1970 to 2001 and are currently in the NFC North division. The Vikings are based in Minneapolis Minnesota and use the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome to play their home games. These days, however, they are to use the TFC Bank Stadium for their home games until 2016, due to renovations of the Metrodome, in efforts to build a new and improved stadium.

It was in August of 1959 that the franchise truly began when it was awarded to Bill Boyer, Maw Winter and HP Skoglund who were businessmen from Minnesota, by the American Football League (AFL). Yet, the businessmen revoked their agreement with the AFL and became the 14th franchise of the NFL just five months later. It was only then, in 1961 that the Minnesota Vikings took the field for the first time. The name, Vikings, is intended to reflect the vast influence of its Scandinavian American culture in Minnesota. It is said that the temperatures in Minnesota are as cold as the original Scandinavian countries and since the Minnesotan people seem to be accustomed to it, Vikings is quite the fitting name. They won their first ever regular season game against the Chicago Bears but went on to lose the next seven games, ending their first season 3-11. The next few years were not kind for the Vikings since the losing streak seemed to have become part of the team. Their only winning season came in 1964 with a record of 8 wins, 7 loses and 1 tie. However, the Vikings have recorded the longest winning streak in a single season which is 12 straight wins in their 1969 season.

The luck of the Vikings seems to be a strange one. On one hand they have one of the highest winning percentages in the National Football League, but on the other hand, they have appeared in 4 of the ever important Super Bowl games and have lost all of them. On a better note, they have emerged League and the NFL Western Conference champions in 1969, NFC conference champs 3 times, NFL Central division champs twice, NFC Central division champs 14 times and NFC North champions twice.

Most recently, the Vikings management has fired their former head coach, Leslie Frazier due to his inability to get the team to perform, finishing their 2013 season with only 5 wins and a tie. Replacing Frazier as head coach is Mike Zimmer, the former defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. The Vikings also have new defensive and offensive coordinators as well. Let us hope that this new coaching staff can bring out the true power of the Minnesota Vikings in their coming season.
