Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles was established way back in 1933, based as the name implies, in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. This 80 year old franchise is a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) which is in turn part of the National Football League (NFL). They play their home games in the Lincoln Financial Field in Philly and belong to the NFC East division. The Eagles were, in fact, a franchise that began to replace the Frankford Yellow Jackets that went bankrupt in the middle of the 1931 season. Their name was inspired by the National Recovery Administration which had a blue eagle insignia.

The first few years did not do the Eagles good for they kept losing every season. Manpower became a major problem since it was difficult to find players to fill the roster due to the drafts of World War II. It was then that the team combined with the Pittsburgh Steelers to form a new team called the Phil-Pit Eagles, or as they were more popularly knows, the Steagles. However, the new team was disbanded at the end of the 1943 season since it was never meant to be a permanent arrangement. Another interesting fact is that they Eagles became the only team to win against the Green Bay Packers, headed by Vince Lombardi, in the playoffs in 1960. The final score was a close 17-13 and the Eagles were led by head coach Buck Shaw.

The Eagles seem to have been shuffled around between a lot of conferences and divisions, finally settling in the NFC East Division. The have made it in to 2 Super Bowls in 1980 and 2004 but unfortunately have lost both those games. However, they have earned 3 NFL titles in 1948, 1949 and in 1960, before the big merger of the NFL and the American Football League (AFL). In 1960, they earned the NFL Eastern conference title and won the NFC title twice, in 1980 and 2004. 13 Division titles have been chalked up in the Eagles’ name, two while playing in the NFL East division and the rest from the NFC East division.

After many ups and downs over the last few years, the 2013 season has proved to be one of their more successful seasons. They won their 13th division title with a season record of 10-6. Nick Foles, the backup for quarterback, Michael Vick, has been the one to lead the Eagles in this eventful season. He became the youngest player to throw the most touchdown passes one game, tying with Peyton Manning for the record number of 7 passes. Overall, the Eagles have scored 51 touchdowns in the 2013 season, which is the highest ever in Eagles history, beating the record set before in 1948.

The Eagles share one of the oldest rivalries in the NFL with the New York Giants beginning 80 years ago, when the Giants slaughtered the Eagles 56-0. Another strong rival of the Eagles are the Dallas Cowboys with the Eagles winning the first ever game played between the two. This rivalry is more known for the resentment among the two fan bases of the teams. It is interesting to note that the Eagles have their own Fight Song, which is played during their home games and following touchdowns or before kick-off.

The 2014 season looks promising for the Eagles, especially if Nick Foles keeps up the way he played in the previous season. But one can never say how their season will go since they have won the first few games before only to lose the next few in line. The fate of the Philadelphia eagles will be known soon as the 2014 season begins quite soon.
